Substance Use Disorder Grants for Nonprofits

Substance abuse is a national epidemic, as are mental disorders relating to consistent patterns of abuse. It is estimated that over 20 million adult Americans have some sort of substance use disorder. Substance abuse itself leads to a wide range of other health and social issues. This is why many nonprofits have dedicated themselves to the fight against substance abuse disorders.

These nonprofits can only do their work, however, thanks to the generous funding provided by substance abuse grants. These grants can be put towards a wide range of purposes. These could include funding detox programs, rehabilitation centers, prevention programs and harm reduction programs.

There are many organizations that might be providing substance use grants at any given time. Traditionally, this included federal organizations such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. There are also many private foundations involved in this space, such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Open Society Foundations. 

When drafting substance use disorder grant proposals, it's important to use extensive and accurate data. You need to make a case that there is a specific need in a specific community, and that your nonprofit can address that need. Statistics could include prevalence rates of substance abuse disorders, overdose statistics and treatment access gaps. Good places to start looking could include the National Institute on Drug Abuse and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
