Agriculture and Horticulture Grants for Nonprofits

It’s often tempting to think of nonprofit work as urban work. Where there’s large collections of people, there are large needs. But nonprofits are doing excellent work in all corners of the world, including in the spaces of agriculture and horticulture. This work is increasingly important in an era threatened by climate change, when the very processes that feed us are under pressure.

Nonprofits involved in agriculture and horticulture require the funding from agriculture grants to operate. This funding is used to help with agricultural programs that promote sustainable agricultural and environmental stewardship. And they can even be used in urban contexts, such as to support community gardens or urban farms.

Agricultural grants come from a wide variety of sources. Traditionally, the government would provide grants via organizations such as the USDA. There are also many private foundations that look to support certain sectors of agriculture, such as the Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education (SARE) program.

When applying for an agricultural grant, data and statistics need to be rigorously collected. Depending on what you want the grant for, you may need to be collecting information on food insecurity rates, the measurable benefits of urban green spaces or trends in sustainable farming practice. Make sure to show the data about results as well. What yield percentages are you hoping to provide? What community engagement in your projects are you looking for? This helps funders understand the urgency of what you’re doing, and how you plan to do it.
