Communities of Alaska Natives face unique challenges compared to the rest of the state, let alone the rest of the nation. This is due to geographic isolation, limited infrastructure and historic underinvestment. There are many nonprofits that have made it their mission to try and support these communities, with the help of Alaska Native grants.

These grants can be put towards all kinds of programs and initiatives. Issues they might tackle could include suicide, chronic disease, poverty and food insecurity. These grants can also be used for the purpose of cultural revitalization, infrastructure investment or language preservation.

There are many different organizations that might provide these kinds of grants, including private foundations such as the First Nations Development Institute or the CIRI Foundation. 

When drafting an Alaska Native grant proposal, it's essential to demonstrate that you understand the communities in question. You need to come prepared with knowledge and data that can outline the disparities that your nonprofit hopes to address. Places to start looking for this data could include the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center or the Indian Health Service.
