Crafts are our collective cultures made tangible. For many, they are an essential way to not only preserve their culture, but to educate about it, and sustain themselves through economic development. However, maintaining production of crafts can be expensive and is not always profitable. This is where nonprofits step in to provide funding and support. 

These nonprofits are only able to give this support thanks to the funding provided by grants. These crafts grants can be put towards all kinds of purposes and programs. These could include craft education, living wages for artisans, hosting exhibitions and fairs or developing the workshops and spaces needed for craft production.

There are many different organizations that provide these kinds of grants. This traditionally included federal agencies, such as the National Endowment for the Arts. There are also many private foundations in this space, such as the Windgate Foundation. 

When drafting a craft grants proposal, it is certainly important to clearly explain the cultural, historical and local-economic impact of the crafts in question. But you’ll want to include data too, in order to make it clear that your plans are sustainable. Make sure to clearly outline what economics, if any, are going to be generated by your nonprofit’s activity. Past successes are always great to include.
