Environmental justice is the idea that everyone, regardless of their social status, has equal rights to a healthy environment. It takes into account the greater exposure that marginalized communities often have to environmental hazards, including pollution, toxic waste and the effects of climate change. 

There are already many nonprofits working in this space helping those affected by environmental catastrophe find redress. These nonprofits are only able to do their good work through the funding provided by environmental justice grants. These grants can be used for a wide range of purposes, including monitoring of environmental hazards, public education campaigns, and advocacy for environmental policies. 

These grants are provided by a wide range of sources. These include state programs, local government initiatives and private foundations such as the Surdna Foundation and the Kresge Foundation.

When drafting an environmental justice grant proposal, it's essential to use accurate, relevant and local data. You need to be able to prove that the communities your nonprofit serves have had a tangible negative impact from environmental issues. You may need to find data on statistics including air and water quality measures, as well as socioeconomic data to prove that your disadvantaged community is being unduly and exceptionally affected.
