Homelessness Grants for Nonprofits

There has been rising numbers when it comes to homelessness in America recently. The homeless tend to lack access to healthcare, mental health support, education and training, creating a cycle of deprivation. There are many nonprofits who make it their mission to try to tackle both the root causes, and the results of the homelessness epidemic. 

These nonprofits are only able to do what they do thanks to the generous funding provided by homelessness grants. These grants can be used for a wide range of purposes - including emergency shelters, transitional and permanent housing, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, food banks and employment assistance.

Traditionally, these grants were funded by federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). There are also many community and private foundations involved in providing homelessness grants, including the Melville Charitable Trust and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 

When drafting a homelessness grant proposal, comprehensive data is important. You don’t only need to prove the prevalence of homelessness in your community of choice, but also the impact it is having on that community. Potentially relevant data could include homelessness rates, the demographics of the homeless, and service gaps for the homeless. Good places to get started on collecting this data could include the Department of Housing and Urban Development, as well as the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
