“Individual grants” are those, as the name applies, that are designed to be awarded to a single person, rather than to an organization or group. Generally, the purpose of this is to support the individual in a particular charitable project they are planning to undertake.

However, nonprofits may need access to individual grants as well. The benefit here is the flexibility - individual grants allow for access to funding for a specific project or program that their regular donations may not cover. This allows an individual within a nonprofit, or affiliated with it, to address unique community needs or to pilot new programming. This is especially useful if the individual in question has unique capabilities or knowledge that allows them to make a special contribution - or if the nonprofit wants to impart training in unique capabilities to an individual.

Individual grants can be found from a wide range of sources, including private scholarships and corporate social responsibility programs. Often these grants will take the form of scholarships or fellowships for professional development. When preparing grant proposals, the individual should try and articulate how the grant can improve their professional development, or how else they might effectively use the funding.
