In a world where truth is a vanishingly precious commodity, journalists are on the front line of preserving the real story. However, this is often an uphill struggle in the greater world. Sometimes the greater challenge for journalists isn’t a hostile state, but simple lack of funding and support. There are many nonprofits who do their best to give journalists what they need to continue to do their essential work.

These nonprofits are only able to do their good work through the generous funding provided by nonprofit grants. These grants help pay for a wide range of essentials - from funding multimedia projects, to providing journalism training.

These grants are provided by an equally wide range of sources. These can include federal agencies or state media councils. Journalism grants can also be provided by private foundations, such as the Knight Foundation, the Pulitzer Center and the International Center for Journalists.

When preparing journalism grant proposals, it's important to include both data, and a compelling story as to why the work of your nonprofit is essential. The data should be used to back up that story, providing a clear example of a gap in journalism that your nonprofit can fill.
