Life sciences, environmental sciences and earth sciences are a collection of fields essential for both understanding and protecting the environment that we all live in. There are many nonprofits involved in this field - nonprofits that are only able to pursue their missions thanks to the generous funding provided by earth sciences grants.

These grants can be put towards all kinds of initiatives. These could include scientific research, public education, data collection, data monitoring as well as advocacy and public engagement. There are, in the same way, many different kinds of organizations that might write these kinds of grants. This includes many private foundations, such as the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. 

When drafting an earth sciences grant proposal, it is essential to use data to back up your claims. You need to prove that there is a real need being unmet, that your nonprofit is uniquely positioned to engage with. The exact statistics you’ll need will depend on your nonprofit’s mission, and the type of earth sciences you are engaging with. Good places to start looking for this data could include the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.
