Literature is perhaps one of the most intimate and direct methods of sharing human experiences. The literary arts can help build empathy and a deeper understanding of the human experience in a way like no other medium. It is for this reason there are many nonprofits that have a mission to support the literary arts. 

These nonprofits are often only able to pursue their mission thanks to the generous donations provided by literary arts grants. These grants can cover all kinds of initiatives, such as funding creating writing workshops, literary festivals, publication, archives and the promotion of literacy in schools.

There are many different organizations that might write these kinds of grants. This traditionally included federal agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts. There are also many private foundations in this space, such as the Whiting Foundation. 

When drafting literacy arts grants, you need to use data to prove that there is a real need in the community you are targeting. Literacy rates and access to literacy education are great places to start. You can find this kind of information from sources such as the World Literacy Foundation or the American Library Association.
