Microfinance is the process of providing small loans and accompanying financial services to underserved communities across the world. The idea is to help these communities and entrepreneurs within them build businesses that would otherwise be unavailable, increase their household incomes, and eventually achieve financial independence. 

There are many nonprofits who are involved, in some way, in the process of microfinance. These nonprofits often need some financial boosts of their own, which they can find in microfinance grants. These grants can cover all kinds of activities - from establishing microloan programs, to providing the business training needed to best utilize those loans.

There are many different organizations that might provide these kinds of grants. This includes international organizations such as the United Nations Capital Development Fund or Kiva, as well as private foundations such as the Mastercard Foundation. 

When drafting a microfinance grant proposal, it's essential to use relevant data on demographics and finances to demonstrate the need for microloans. You should also come prepared with statistics on success stories, to demonstrate the potential of your own initiatives. Good places to start collecting this kind of information can include the United Nations Development Programme, as well as the Microfinance Information Exchange, the World Bank Global Findex Database and the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor.
