Pinning down the concept of public policy isn’t easy. And yet every government action, in the end, comes down to questions of public policy. What will any particular government body do, or not do, when faced with an issue? Public policy is required to tackle many of our most pressing issues - social, economic and environmental. This is why many nonprofits have involved themselves deeply in the world of policy. 

These nonprofits are only able to perform their activities thanks to the funding provided by policy grants. These grants can be used for all kinds of purposes, including research, advocacy and public awareness campaigns relating to issues of public policy. There are many organizations that provide these kinds of grants. This includes many private foundations, such as the MacArthur Foundation or the Open Society Foundations. 

When drafting policy grant proposals, you need to make sure that you have a full understanding of statistics relevant to the policy that you are interested in altering. You may need comprehensive demographic and economic statistics to make your case. Good places to get started looking for this kind of information could include the Pew Research Center, the Congressional Budget Office or the National Conference of State Legislatures.
