It is an irrefutable fact that America, and many Western countries, are diverse places. The existence of this diversity is a hallmark of America - the idea that many peoples can strive together for something beyond their own differences. However, it also comes with many challenges, with race relations and equity being a significant concern for many.  It is no surprise then that many nonprofits operate in this space. They’re only able to do so, however, thanks to the generous donations from diversity grants. 

Diversity grants can encompass a wide range of purposes. These can include being used for diversity or sensitivity training, the launching of community outreach initiatives, the support of policy advocacy efforts, or the promotion of more equitable access to education and employment. 

These diversity grants are provided by a wide range of companies. This traditionally included federal and state agencies. There are also many private foundations involved in this space, such as the Ford Foundation or the Open Society Foundations. 

When drafting a diversity grant proposal, you need to be rigorous with your data. You need to prove that there is a real gap in equity, and that your nonprofit is positioned to address it. Some places you can start looking for data include the U.S. Census Bureau or the Pew Research Center.
