Cities provide the impetus for the vast majority of America’s economic growth. However, the design of North American cities also render them extremely expensive to maintain. But it’s not just about dollars and construction. Cities are also the centers of our culture - local, national and global. Many nonprofits have made it their mission to focus on urban development, to help cities and the communities within them thrive.

These nonprofits can only pursue their missions thanks to the generous funding provided by urban development grants. These grants help cover a wide range of activities, including urban renewal, affordable housing, public infrastructure, sustainable urban planning and improved social services.

There are many different kinds of organizations that provide these kinds of grants. These traditionally included federal organizations such as the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. There are also many private foundations involved in this space, such as the Kresge Foundation. 

When drafting an urban development grant proposal, it's essential that you collect relevant data regarding the cities and communities you intend to help. This could include demographic data on statistics such as income levels, housing availability and public transportation access. A good place to begin collecting such demographic data is the U.S. Census Bureau.
