Veterans and military personnel give their all for their country but are often left in vulnerable positions after their service. Nonprofits that support veterans serve an essential role in improving the lives of veterans and active military personnel. These nonprofits rely heavily on grants in order to do their good work.

The good work in question can take many forms. Nonprofits can provide healthcare services, mental health counseling, housing or job placement assistance. Grants help provide the funding to bridge the gaps in these services that veterans and military personnel might experience.

Nonprofits can find veteran grants from a variety of sources. Foundations involved in this space include the Disabled Veterans National Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Standing Together Initiative. There are also many corporate philanthropic programs that also provide grants to help promote the welfare of veterans, such as the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the Walmart Foundation. 

When applying for veteran-related grants, it's essential that you include data that demonstrates the challenges faced by veterans in your area of choice - be that a geographical area, or an area of concern (such as serving psychological needs or helping fund veteran housing.) However, the human touch is also very useful here - try to give real life examples of veterans who need aid, or veterans who have found that aid through the use of your nonprofit. Those success stories especially make the work your nonprofit does more relatable and compelling.
