Lands that have been chosen to be preserved in their natural state are a truly precious resource, invaluable for protecting biodiversity, supporting clean water and air and offering unique cultural and tourism value. There are many nonprofits that advocate for the protection of these spaces, and the creation of new wilderness areas.

These nonprofits are only able to do what they do thanks to the generous funding provided by wilderness grants. These grants can be put towards all kinds of purposes, including  land acquisition to expand wilderness areas, ecological restorations of those areas, or invasive species removal. There are many organizations that might provide these kinds of grants. This includes many private foundations, such as the Fund for Wild Nature. 

When drafting a wilderness grant proposal, it's essential to use data to support your claims. You need to have a clear understanding of the wilderness area your nonprofit is looking to preserve or aid. Relevant data could include the legal protection status of that area, the species of concern within it and threats to those species. Good places to get started researching this information could include Wilderness Connect or the Global Forest Watch.
