Food Access and Food Security Grants for Nonprofits

We often take the ability to eat what we want, when we want for granted. We associate the concept of hunger and famine with far-off countries, or a further past. But roughly 13% of Americans have very low or low food security. This means that just putting food on the table is quite literally a challenge for a major sector of the populace. There are many nonprofits across the country, and beyond, whose mission is to tackle this issue head on.

Food security grants allow these nonprofits to continue to do their essential work in providing for the needy. This can include funding programs such as food pantries, community gardens or mobile markets. They can also be used for educational outreach on topics such as nutrition and options for federal or state food relief. 

The funding for these grants can come from a wide range of sources. These could include federal agencies such as the USDA, or private foundations such as the Walmart Foundation and Feeding America. There are also many state and community organizations dedicated to tackling the issue of food insecurity on a local scale. 

When preparing a food security grant, it’s essential that you use data to outline just how severe the food insecurity is within the community you hope to serve. You want to make sure that the statistics you are using are relevant to that particular community, and outlines a clear gap that your nonprofit is poised to fill.
