Challenge Seeks Ideas to Improve Essential Services in Cities
Bloomberg Philanthropies: Mayors Challenge

Application deadline: December 20, 2024
Grant amount: Fifty finalists receive $50,000. Twenty-five winning cities receive $1 million and other supports.
Description: The Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge is a competition designed to support cities in the development of ambitious and innovative ideas that improve residents' lives. The 2025 Global Mayors Challenge is inviting cities from anywhere in the world with populations of 100,000+ residents to reimagine the most essential service they deliver to residents. Applications must focus on a core city service, defined as citywide, resident-facing, and falling under municipal authority. These can include public transportation; public safety; healthcare; internet connectivity; energy use; clean air, water, and infrastructure; public education; public libraries, parks, and recreation; social services; housing and shelter; waste management and sanitation; and economic and workforce development. Mayors or chief executives of cities with a population greater than 100,000 are eligible to apply. Fifty finalist cities will receive $50,000 to strengthen their idea, and participate in design, prototyping, and implementation coaching. Of the 50 finalists, 25 winning cities will receive $1 million, dedicated project staff, and multiyear support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to help bring their ideas to life.

MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation

Description: The MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation is a joint initiative by MLB and MLBPA to support efforts that focus on improving the caliber, effectiveness, and availability of amateur baseball and softball programs across the United States and internationally. The Foundation provides support for capital projects, such as field lighting, renovations, and construction; baseball and softball programs; education initiatives, including programs, exhibits, and other learning opportunities that use baseball and softball as its primary focus; and player and infrastructure equipment in public schools.

$250 Million Available to Improve Women’s Mental and Physical Health
Pivotal: Action for Women’s Health

Application deadline: December 3, 2024, for registrations, and January 10, 2025, for applications
Geographic scope: Global
Grant amount: $1 million to $5 million USD
Description: Action for Women’s Health is a $250 million global open call launched by Pivotal that will fund organizations around the world working to improve women’s mental and physical health. Flexible funding between $1 million and $5 million will be awarded to an array of organizations—of diverse geographies, sizes, perspectives, and approaches—united by their work to improve the mental and physical health of women. The focus of each organization may range from improving women’s daily health, their longevity, their access to care, their ability to engage in daily life, or their opportunity to form and support a family. The goal is to open access to funding streams to organizations and groups that historically have not had access to them. Applicant organizations should center equity in their approach and be poised to scale their work to strengthen the health of more women. Organizations from around the world are eligible to apply.

Grants Expand Appreciation of Sculpture in the U.K. and Globally
Henry Moore Foundation

Application deadline: The upcoming deadlines are December 1, 2024, and March 1, 2025.
Geographic scope: Global and the United Kingdom
Description: The Henry Moore Foundation supports the growth and development of sculpture across historical, modern, and contemporary registers, and funds research that expands the appreciation of sculpture. Grants are awarded in support of exhibitions, exhibition catalogues, commissions, conferences, research, and the development of collections through acquisitions, conservation, cataloguing, and display. Nonprofit organizations based in the United Kingdom and internationally are eligible to apply. Individuals are eligible to apply for PhD level research and travel grants. Artists are supported through commissions, acquisitions, and exhibitions at nonprofit organizations and cannot apply directly.

National Endowment for Democracy

Application deadline: The upcoming deadlines are January 7 and April 29, 2025.
Geographic scope: Global, except for the United States
Description: The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democratic institutions around the world. NED makes grants to non-governmental organizations outside the United States (including civic organizations, associations, independent media, and other similar organizations) working to advance democratic goals and strengthen democratic institutions. Applications are encouraged from organizations working in diverse environments including newly established democracies, semi-authoritarian countries, highly repressive societies, and countries undergoing democratic transitions.

Fellowship Builds Disaster Resilience in Specific Countries
Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure

Geographic scope: CDRI Member Countries
Grant amount: $15,000 plus additional funding of $5,000
Description: The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is a multi-stakeholder global partnership that aims to build resilience into infrastructure systems to ensure sustainable development. The CDRI Fellowship Programme invests in cutting-edge research and innovative solutions towards disaster and climate resilient infrastructure. The Fellowship provides financial support, peer learning, and capacity development opportunities to promote transformative, actionable, and scalable solutions for real world issues related to disaster resilience of infrastructure. The 2025-26 call for proposals invites proposals in the areas of wildfires, coastal resilience, and extreme heat. Applicants may also apply under any other theme provided it focuses on disaster resilience and infrastructure. The Fellowship is open to teams of individuals who are citizens of CDRI Member Countries. Applicants may include students, researchers, academics, and practitioners from government agencies and non-governmental, private, and civil society organizations.

Efforts Combating Poverty and Inequality Supported in Southern Africa
Southern Africa Trust

Application deadline: None
Geographic scope: Southern Africa
Description: The Southern Africa Trust works to strengthen the voice and agency of poor people in policy processes to reduce poverty and inequality in southern Africa. The Trust allocates grants to projects in the thematic areas of trade and development; industrialization; food, agriculture, and natural resources; migration and social protection; and climate change. Most of the Trust’s grantees are national network associations that implement projects with a regional footprint. The Trust also gives grants to regional networks, regional apex organizations, social movements, civil society organizations, and media houses.

Book Aid International

Geographic scope: Current countries of operation in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Caribbean
Grant amount: Book donations are provided. 
Description: Book Aid International's mission is to give people around the world who lack access to books the opportunity to read for pleasure, study, and lifelong learning. Book Aid International provides donations of new books in English to organizations in one of the current countries of operation in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Caribbean. Eligible applicants include nonprofit or state or publicly-funded organizations operating in one of the following sectors: public and community libraries, services for refugees, people at risk of displacement or marginalized groups, schools, training colleges, prisons, non-governmental organizations, and higher education or medical institutions. In order to be eligible, organizations must have a secure and accessible area for the books and a designated person who will be responsible for them and be able to collect the books from a national distribution partner and pay a small fee towards their costs.

Awards Honor Health Achievements in Mexico and Latin America
Fundación Carlos Slim (Carlos Slim Foundation): Carlos Slim Health Awards

Geographic scope: Mexico and Latin America
Grant amount: Awards of $100,000 are provided.
Description: The Carlos Slim Health Awards, an initiative of Fundación Carlos Slim (the Carlos Slim Foundation), recognize individuals and institutions committed to improving the health of the population of Mexico and Latin America. For the current cycle, an award will be made in each of the following categories: The Health Award for Outstanding Institution recognizes public and private nonprofit institutions whose programs, whether academic or fieldwork, contribute to innovative and efficient public health alternatives for the region’s population. Those contributions may be in areas such as healthcare, prevention, research, or human resources training. Institutions must have operated in the health field for at least ten years and must be a public or private nonprofit institution legally constituted in any of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Health Award for Life Achievement in Research recognizes those dedicated to health research whose work has allowed the generation of innovative solutions to the main challenges in public health in the Latin American and Caribbean region. The nominated person must be a citizen or permanent resident of one of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and must have at least 15 years of professional experience in the field of health research. (Self-nominations are not accepted in this category.)

Japan Fund for Global Environment

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted from November 11 to December 2, 2024.
Geographic scope: Japan and developing countries
Description: The Japan Fund for Global Environment (JFGE), a division of the Environmental Restoration and Conservation Agency of Japan, provides support for environmental activities, both in Japan and developing countries. Support is provided to both Japanese and non-Japanese organizations for environmental conservation in developing regions, as well as to Japanese organizations for environmental conservation within Japan. Applications are accepted from non-governmental and nonprofit organizations, both based in Japan and outside Japan. Non-Japanese applicant organizations must have a Japanese representative (person or corporation) that has a track record of involvement in the environmental conservation activities of the non-Japanese organization requesting the grant and that is capable of communicating with non-Japanese organizations applying in local languages.

Grant Improves Legal Training in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Geographic scope: Bosnia and Herzegovina
Grant amount: One award of $600,000 will be made. 
Description: The Advancing Legal Reasoning, Writing, Practice and Professionalism in BiH program supports projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to address: 1) the gap in how law faculties in BiH equip students with necessary legal skillsets required for the legal profession; and 2) the necessity for credible legal practitioners to positively influence law students and young lawyers and impart their professionalism, ethics, values, and resilience. Specifically, the program will prepare law students to enter the legal profession with skills needed to work effectively in the justice system, and more broadly it will positively shape legal culture in BiH, serve as a longer-term strategy to combat corruption, and build public trust and confidence in justice institutions and the legal profession.
