Shifting the Nonprofit Mindset: Bonnie Chavez’s Vision for Resilience and Innovation

| GS INSIGHTS

Navigating the complexities of today’s nonprofit sector requires more than just expertise—it demands a forward-thinking approach that blends community-focused strategies with sustainable impact. Bonnie Chavez embodies this approach as the driving force behind Building Beloved Communities, a national consulting firm focused on supporting nonprofit and government organizations. As the CEO, her passion lies in co-creating tailored solutions with clients to help them thrive in the ever-evolving nonprofit landscape. With nearly 23 years of experience, Bonnie is deeply committed to offering community-centered strategies that solve problems effectively and sustainably.

Bonnie’s journey into nonprofit consulting began after a career in both nonprofit and for-profit healthcare. She spent several years in philanthropy and community engagement departments before transitioning to population health, where she explored the social determinants of health. After experiencing a layoff due to a merger, Bonnie faced what she calls a "professional midlife crisis," prompting her to reflect on her career’s direction. She soon realized her passion for building nonprofit infrastructure and helping organizations maximize their impact. This passion led her to found Building Beloved Communities seven years ago.

Despite her CEO title, Bonnie spends the majority of her time actively consulting with clients, ensuring that their needs are met on a daily basis.

“I try to “CEO” at least one day a week, but 90% of my time is spent working directly with clients,” Bonnie says.

Bonnie’s favorite aspect of her work is the opportunity to explore new sectors. For instance, she mentions the innovative use of distribution models for both food and harm reduction services—such as Narcan kits—across different populations, including those who are unhoused. This ability to cross-pollinate ideas is what sets Building Beloved Communities apart from traditional consulting models.

“I love working in industries I haven’t yet had the chance to explore,” she says, explaining that the firm’s strength lies in applying creative solutions from one sector to another. For Bonnie, the most rewarding part of her work comes when clients express relief and gratitude upon finding a solution to a pressing issue. “The sigh of relief when a client realizes a problem is solved is priceless,” Bonnie says.

While the rewards are many, Bonnie also faces challenges in her line of work. One of the most significant hurdles is helping organizations shift from a scarcity mindset to one that embraces abundance and collaboration. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration and sees it as crucial for nonprofits, especially in today’s funding landscape.

Bonnie’s commitment to collaboration isn’t just a principle she teaches her clients—it’s something Building Beloved Communities practices actively. The company is known for its radical employee-centered policies, which prioritize inclusivity, and for its openness to collaborating with other consultants. Bonnie firmly believes that nonprofits, especially in challenging times, are best supported by a collective effort.

In light of the current political climate and funding cuts to nonprofit organizations, Bonnie’s work is more essential than ever. She recognizes the struggles many organizations face but remains optimistic.

“Nonprofits are used to pivoting and reallocating resources,” Bonnie says. “This is just another challenge on their plate, and they’ll get through it—together.”

Bonnie also sees the rise of mutual aid networks as an adaptive strategy in these times, describing a scenario in which two organizations—one with an extra outreach van and the other with a need for therapy services—collaborate to meet the needs of their shared population. This kind of innovative resource-sharing is emblematic of the kind of creativity and collaboration that Building Beloved Communities champions.

Bonnie’s message to nonprofit organizations and government agencies is simple: “Keep going. We are cheering you on, and we are here to help.” She encourages consultants and service providers to reach out and collaborate, recognizing that working together can amplify impact and help ensure that nonprofits continue to thrive.

With her hands-on leadership and a deep commitment to the success of the nonprofits she serves, Bonnie is making a lasting impact on the sector. Her vision for a more connected, collaborative, and community-centered approach to nonprofit work is one that will continue to inspire positive change for years to come.
