TechSoup's Heartbeat: How Alison Yee Supports Nonprofits Through Innovation and Passion

| GS INSIGHTS

At the heart of every successful nonprofit is an emphasis on combining passion, purpose, and the right tools to help them achieve their goals. Alison Yee, a Program Manager at TechSoup, is passionate about helping nonprofits leverage technology to scale their missions. As a key player in TechSoup’s mission to empower nonprofits, Alison’s role revolves around supporting organizations with the software and hardware tools they need to operate efficiently and achieve their goals. However, she’s quick to emphasize that TechSoup’s work extends far beyond just providing access to technology—it’s about partnering with organizations through every stage of their lifecycle, from startup to growth to scaling.

“TechSoup helps nonprofits get to where they want to go operationally, providing the tech that they need to move forward,” Alison says. “But there’s so much more we do—we support them throughout the whole life cycle and growth process.”

Alison’s journey to TechSoup wasn’t a straight path, but one shaped by a deep passion for the nonprofit sector. After graduating from college, Alison began her professional career at Give2Asia, an organization that facilitates grantmaking across Asia, helping both institutional and individual donors support a variety of causes across multiple countries. It was there, working primarily in the development side of the organization, that Alison honed her skills in storytelling and operations.

“I worked with people to understand how they could grant professionally, and that really shaped my perspective on how nonprofits and technology could work together,” Alison says.

Through her time at Give2Asia, Alison developed relationships with colleagues who eventually migrated to TechSoup. This piqued her curiosity about how technology could help nonprofits streamline operations and use their resources more effectively.

Alison’s role at TechSoup involves reviewing and managing the relationships between nonprofit organizations and TechSoup’s vast catalog of technology resources. She finds herself regularly impressed by the sheer diversity and passion of the nonprofits she works with.

“What I love most about TechSoup is seeing the wide variety of nonprofits we engage with,” Alison says. “Everything from organizations that focus on environmental access to youth programs, to legal and immigration clinics. People are so passionate about how they want to serve their community, and it’s inspiring to see.”

While Alison enjoys working with all nonprofits, she admits to having a soft spot for organizations focused on environmental access, particularly those introducing BIPOC youth to the outdoors. Additionally, she has a special place in her heart for legal and immigration clinics.

“I feel strongly about supporting organizations that work on these crucial issues,” Alison says. “At TechSoup, we get the opportunity to support these organizations with the technology they need to do their work more effectively, and that’s incredibly rewarding.”

Alison’s commitment to TechSoup is rooted in the organization’s collaborative approach and its deep sense of purpose. She credits her team members as one of the most rewarding aspects of her role. The dedication of the team, combined with their shared goal of supporting the nonprofit sector, creates an environment that Alison describes as both fulfilling and motivating.

“The people I work with at TechSoup are amazing,” Alison says. “Even though I work from home most of the time, I feel so connected to the team. Everyone is fun, and the passion they bring to their work is inspiring.”

However, working in the nonprofit space is not without its challenges. Alison acknowledges that one of the most persistent difficulties is the ongoing issue of funding.

“Nonprofits have always struggled with securing funding, and that challenge remains today. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what the issues are, but the anxiety surrounding funding is real,” Alison says. “The concern is valid, but I think the resilience of the nonprofit sector shines through. We have faith that nonprofits will continue to adapt and find ways to move forward.”

One of the key differentiators for TechSoup is its emphasis on long-term partnerships. Alison points to the organization’s collaboration with GrantStation as a shining example of this. TechSoup has enjoyed a 20-year partnership with GrantStation, an organization that helps nonprofits access grant opportunities.

“The partnership with GrantStation has been wonderful to see grow over the years. It’s an example of how partnerships can really sustain organizations over time,” Alison says. “It’s nice to witness the impact of long-term relationships in the nonprofit space.”

As Alison continues her work at TechSoup, she remains deeply committed to supporting nonprofits through technology. The opportunity to learn, grow, and collaborate with such passionate individuals keeps her motivated.

Alison’s enthusiasm for the nonprofit sector and her role at TechSoup underscores the power of technology in transforming how organizations operate. Whether it's providing access to the right tools, fostering collaboration, or offering expertise, her work is helping nonprofits build stronger, more resilient communities.
