Do you remember back in the aughts, or should I say noughties, when everyone you knew had a blog? You may have bookmarked their pages, or those of strangers, to live a bit vicariously through their stories of overseas (mis)adventures or photos of the marvelous creations emerging from their kitchens.
Fast forward to 2025, and you might think that the blog has been killed off by its younger nemesis social media, but in the nonprofit space the world of blogs is alive and well. In fact, for nonprofit professionals, blogs are a key resource to keep up on best practices and trends in the sector. Here are a few of my favorites.
Best Nonprofit Blogs by Companies
Some of the most useful and informative blogs in the nonprofit space are put out by the companies that serve the sector. The ones below either offer a broad array of content or home in on a specific area of interest to nonprofit organizations.
The ENGAGE Blog, by Blackbaud
The ENGAGE Blog—published by the nonprofit software provider Blackbaud—is “the premier resource for trends, best practices, and need-to-know news for organizations across the social good ecosystem.” It covers topics such as fundraising, finance and accounting, education, corporate social responsibility, grantmaking, and leadership. Some of their most popular articles demystify the various aspects of fundraising, covering everything from creating donor profiles to utilizing AI in prospect research and the creation of compelling appeals. For additional insights from thought leaders in the nonprofit space, tune into the ENGAGE Podcast.
Nonprofit Law Blog, by NEO Law Group
This blog stands out for its focus on legal issues affecting the nonprofit community. Its authors—hailing from the NEO Law Group—pen insightful and well-researched articles on law-related topics such as proposed legislation and legal considerations around 501(c)(3) tax status. The blog also serves as a sort of clearinghouse for interesting articles and resources from across the third sector. Every week, they publish a list of recommended nonprofit resources, keeping you up to date on the latest happenings in the nonprofit and philanthropic worlds, significant current events, and recent articles and resources focused on thematic topics of interest.
TopNonprofits, by Nexus Marketing
Nexus Marketing’s TopNonprofits blog provides a wealth of insights and actionable advice in the form of tips, stories, articles, and more. If you are a nonprofit professional looking for a detailed how-to guide on any number of topics related to fundraising, nonprofit technology, and organizational development, you may want to take a deep dive into the blog archives. For those interested in learning more, Nexus Marketing also hosts free webinars aimed at nonprofit, education, and other mission-driven audiences through NXUnite.
The Grantsmanship Center Blog
If you are just starting out in the field of grantwriting, or are a seasoned professional, delving into the Grantsmanship Center Blog will likely teach you something new. The blog covers various facets of the grants process (i.e. grantseeking, proposal writing, and grant management) as well as topics related to fundraising and organizational management. Readers can filter articles by clicking on one of several categories.
GS Insights, by GrantStation
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention GrantStation’s GS Insights blog. Written by both in-house and external authors, this blog offers a variety of perspectives on philanthropy, fundraising, and of course, everything grant-related. If you are visiting the blog for the first time, you might want to check out the recent series of engaging interviews with sector leaders such as Phillip Deng of Grantable, Sonal Modisette of Girls on the Run, Mindy Muller of Community Development Professionals, and more.
Best Nonprofit Blogs by Organizations
Blogs by nonprofit organizations serving the sector itself can also unlock a treasure trove of information.
TechSoup Blog
If you are looking to channel your inner computer geek in the coming year, or just figure out how technology can help you streamline operations, it’s worth exploring the TechSoup Blog. Written for a nonprofit audience, this blog delves into a wide range of topics including technology planning, data management, IT security, and even the intersection between technology and grantwriting. In addition, it provides information on the latest software and hardware available to TechSoup members through the product catalogue. (Nonprofits can choose to access either free or paid membership options.)
Alliance Blog, by Alliance Publishing Trust
This blog, published by the U.K. registered charity Alliance Publishing Trust, is the go-to source for news and information related to the world of philanthropy. If you are looking to get an international perspective on the latest developments in this space, you will appreciate that the articles have been written by civil society leaders from a variety of mission focuses and geographic areas. The Trust also publishes Alliance Magazine.
Best Nonprofit Blogs by Individuals
Individual authors, working alone or in collaboration with other professionals, are also putting out quality work in the nonprofit blog space. These individuals often work as consultants to nonprofits and utilize their blogs to drive business and name recognition.
Communicate!, by Dennis Fischman
The Communicate! blog is published by nonprofit communications consultant Dennis Fischman. It includes articles written by Dennis himself, with a focus on, you guessed it, nonprofit communications, as well as guest posts by recognized authors on a number of nonprofit-related topics. The blog is updated quite frequently and, as of this writing, features 280 pages of articles dating all the way back to 2006. Somehow Communicate! has managed to weather the ups and downs of blogging since the early days, and we suspect that has to do with both the depth and breadth of content available on this site.
Amy Eisenstein Blog
This blog is published by Amy Eisenstein, CEO and Co-Founder of Capital Campaign Pro. It provides fundraising advice spanning a number of topics such as Giving Tuesday, major gifts, capital campaigns, and more.
Joan Garry Consulting Blog
Joan Garry wears many hats. She runs a consulting business, started the Nonprofit Leadership Lab, and is the author of a popular blog. This blog is primarily aimed at an audience of executive directors, board leaders, and fundraising professionals, and individuals in these roles can filter the articles to find those most suited to their role.
Of course, this list of the ten best nonprofit blogs reflects only a fraction of the high-quality content that is out there in the nonprofit blogosphere. If you are curious about exploring other blogs (and nonprofit resources), visit GrantStation’s PathFinder library and click on “Blog” in the “Format” column on the right. Perhaps you will find yourself bookmarking a few to follow in the coming year.
